Springboard seeks outstanding young dancers

Springboard is a unique opportunity for young people planning to pursue a career in dance.

Hampshire County Council and Hampshire Dance are searching for outstanding young dancers who aspire to be the next leading dance professionals. The Springboard Dance Bursary Scheme will help dancers create a bespoke training programme to enhance and develop their skills.

Successful candidates will receive up to £500 of dance training and development with the guided support of the Bursary Scheme Manager and additional Springboard Training Events.

Application deadline: Friday 1 June 2012

Audition date: Saturday 30 June 2012 at Winchester Discovery Centre

Emerge education project in Eastleigh

Following on from the success of the Emerge Festival in May of last year Wet Picnic are pleased to announce Emerge 2012. Whilst in this Olympic year there is no programme of performances aimed at promoting new and emergent talent in the exciting and growing field of Street Arts, the celebratory children’s event is going ahead as usual. 2012 shall be the third edition of Emerge, which this year is organised through the University of Winchester in collaboration with The Point in Eastleigh and Winchester-based group Wet Picnic.

The theme for 2012 is the London Olympics, and the schools will be looking at the diverse sporting achievements we celebrate during the games, and how they can unite people in one celebration through their theatre workshops with practitioner, Javan Hughes, and culminating in a performance taking place in Leigh Road Park, Eastleigh in May.

The Emerge Festival aims to promote community awareness and engagement with Street Arts through the school workshops and performances centered around the London Olympics.

Local business launch at the Tourist Information Centre

Sew Iconic is launching its debut range of vibrant and unique printed designs of Winchester at the Tourist Information Centre on The Broadway from 11am on Saturday 5 May 2012.

This new partnership business in Winchester is run by local entrepreneurs Andrea Brindle and Jennie Heath. The business partners are looking forward to seeing their modern images of the city in use in the form of printed images on their brightly coloured bags, cushions, tea towels and fair-trade baby and childrenswear range.

After taking a stall at The Winchester Art and Design Market in order to gauge market opinion Sew Iconic was left with a very clear message: visitors and residents want to see ‘contemporary and stylish designs of Winchester on everyday products’.

“Our range is carefully selected to appeal to all ages,” says Andrea. ”Whether you are a tourist, a resident, or have fond memories of Winchester, we hope that you will enjoy using the products and be reminded of our beautiful, iconic city. We look forward to meeting visitors at the Tourist Information Centre on 5 May.”

Free music tuition with Winnall Rock School for young people

The latest series of Bang Bang Boom and The Hammer Hammers workshops starts next Wednesday 2 May and there are still places available.

Small group workshops (electric guitar, drumming, choir/vocals and piano) are for anyone in Winchester aged 10 – 18 of any ability and are taught by friendly and professional tutors in the WRS studios (upstairs at King Alfred Youth Activity Centre (KAYAC)).

Sessions are free due to a grant awarded to by the national Youth Music organisation (www.youthmusic.org.uk).

All young people are welcomed but when demand is high priority will be given to young people from Stanmore, Highcliffe, Weeke and Winnall.

Applications are invited for the fifth Cockpit Arts / NADFAS Award which aims to support professional craftspeople working with traditional craft skills. Particular consideration will be given to crafts requiring skills at risk of dying out.

The prize is free studio space and business development support for one year!

The Cockpit Arts / NADFAS Award recipient will be awarded a place at a Cockpit Arts incubator for a year. Worth 3,000, this includes the following benefits:

Studio space for a year within the creative community at Cockpit Arts, London.
Business and professional development services including on-site coaching, a personalised development plan, access to finance, workshops and events.
A range of selling and promotional opportunities including the popular Cockpit Arts Open Studios events.
Opportunity to collaborate with other designer-makers in the Cockpit community.
Access to office facilities and resource centre.
